(Seasonal)Tortuguero is considered as the most critical site for the nesting of the great Caribbean Green Sea Turtle.
Turtles come from all over the Caribbean Sea to lay their eggs in the warm sands of the 22 miles beach. The surroundings of the beach are the National Park Tortuguero, and the laws for the protection of these impressive creatures are rigorous.
The only area where visitors can reach is around the town and hotels of the place, plus a couple of miles that lay in front of the National Park. The beach has no lights and visitors must be dressed in dark colors as turtles evade the area if they see movement on the beach.
The tour is provided in general by locals of Tortuguero, some of them old poachers that turned into guides. It takes two hours and even though, between July and September is rare not to see the turtle nesting, we cannot guarantee that the sight will happen.
