The serpentine road crosses fertile lands where all types and forms of crops grow, all the while providing a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and mountains. At the very top of the summit, on cloudless days, one can have the luck of an incredible bird’s eye view of both the Pacific and the Caribbean coasts.
As we descend from the volcano to the city of Cartago, we will stop at a famous pilgrimage site for many devotees, some of which travel for days or even weeks by foot to the Virgin of the Angels Basilica every August. The Basilica has large vaulted ceilings and exquisite examples of stained glass windows showing a combination of architecture and art which makes this a must-see location.
Afterward, we will stop at the Lankester Gardens, a Research Center of the University of Costa Rica which protect more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads, and countless species of other plants, this is also a place where you can walk and enjoy due to its beauty.
Next, we will head to the Valley of Orosi, a place with unparalleled beauty in every direction you see. We will be visiting one of the few remaining authentic colonial churches in this country and will stop to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch in a local restaurant of the area.
